Dragon Age: Origins guide · Updated

Your Thedas setup on another PC.

Years of Dragon Age: Origins mods and a playthrough in progress don't have to stay on an old PC. SyncCrate copies your override mods, add-ins and saves between PCs, and after the first time only what changed.

// 01 Why

Why moving a modded Dragon Age: Origins is tricky

Dragon Age: Origins keeps mods in two places in Documents/BioWare/Dragon Age. Most texture, fix and tweak mods go into packages/core/override, often in many subfolders, while larger mods installed from .dazip files go into AddIns. Saves sit in Characters, one folder per character.

Setting that up again on a new PC means finding the old mod archives, installing the DAZips again and putting every override file back where it was, and a save from a modded playthrough may not load without the same mods.

SyncCrate syncs all three folders directly between PCs. It compares every file by content, copies only what's different, and shows you the list before anything changes.

Built in for Dragon Age: Origins

  • Disabling that sticks. Turning a mod off renames it to .disabled in place, because the game also loads mods from subfolders.
  • Game-running warning. SyncCrate warns you before syncing while Dragon Age: Origins is still open.
  • Undo and history. Undo the last sync in one click, and put back any single file a sync replaced or deleted.

// 03 How it works

Sync Dragon Age: Origins in three steps

  1. Install and add the game

    Install SyncCrate on every PC and add Dragon Age: Origins in the Game Browser. Its folder is found automatically.

  2. One PC hosts

    The PC with the setup everyone should have clicks Start Hosting. The others pick it under Scan for Hosts on the same network, or paste its join code from anywhere.

  3. Compare and sync

    Check the list of new, changed and conflicting files, then Sync Now. Only the files that differ are copied, PC to PC.

TipClose the game on the receiving PC before syncing. SyncCrate warns you if it's still running. The game's list of installed add-ins is kept in its Settings folder, which isn't synced, so a synced add-in that doesn't show up may need its DAZip installed once.

// 04 Common problems

When Dragon Age: Origins mods don't match

  • Disabled mods that still load

    The game reads every subfolder of override, so moving a file into a "disabled" folder inside it doesn't turn it off.

    SyncCrate disables a mod by renaming it to .disabled in place, which the game skips.

  • Override files fighting each other

    Two mods that change the same file conflict, and it's hard to tell which one causes a problem.

    Find a broken mod turns half of your mods off, you test, and it narrows it down until one mod is left.

  • A playthrough on a new PC

    Saves are tied to their character folders, and a modded save expects the same mods.

    Sync Characters together with override and AddIns, and the playthrough continues where you left it.

  • A mod change you regret

    Replacing an override file with another mod's version sometimes breaks something else.

    Files a sync replaced stay in File history, and Undo last sync puts the whole sync back.

Good to know

  • DLC isn't copied. Awakening and the other DLC need to be installed on each PC, and saves that use them need them too.
  • Your settings stay yours. Only override, AddIns and Characters sync.
  • Steam, EA app or GOG doesn't matter: the mods and saves live in Documents either way.

// FAQ

Dragon Age: Origins questions

Where are Dragon Age: Origins mods and saves?

In Documents\BioWare\Dragon Age: override mods in packages\core\override, DAZip add-ins in AddIns and saves in Characters. SyncCrate finds it automatically.

How do I move my Dragon Age: Origins saves to a new PC?

Install SyncCrate on both, host on the old PC, join from the new one and Compare & Sync. Sync the mods too if the playthrough used them.

Do DAZip mods sync?

The installed add-in folders do. The game also keeps a list of installed add-ins in its Settings folder, which isn't synced, so if an add-in doesn't appear in game, install its DAZip once on that PC.

Is there multiplayer?

No. Dragon Age: Origins is single-player. SyncCrate is for moving your setup to a new PC or giving a friend the same mods.
