// 01 Why

Why a modded Subnautica is hard to move

Subnautica is a single-player game, but a modded one takes real setup: BepInEx, library mods like Nautilus that other mods depend on, and a pile of plugins that all have to be versions that work with your game version. Many older mods were made for a mod loader the game no longer uses, so picking the right downloads again on a second PC takes a while.

Saves have their own catch. A base built with modded items or a playthrough using a mod's new biomes expects those mods, and loading it without them can lose what the mods added.

SyncCrate syncs the plugins folder and the save slots from one PC to the others. Files are compared by content, only the differences are copied, and you see the list before anything changes.

Built in for Subnautica

  • Script warnings. .dll files run code on your PC, so they're flagged for you to review before they sync.
  • BepInEx check. Warns when BepInEx isn't installed on a PC, because the synced mods can't load without it.
  • Disabling that sticks. Turning a mod off renames it to .disabled in place, because the game also loads mods from subfolders.
  • Game-running warning. SyncCrate warns you before syncing while Subnautica is still open.
  • Undo and history. Undo the last sync in one click, and put back any single file a sync replaced or deleted.

// 03 How it works

Sync Subnautica in three steps

  1. Install and add the game

    Install SyncCrate on every PC and add Subnautica in the Game Browser. Its folder is found automatically.

  2. One PC hosts

    The PC with the setup everyone should have clicks Start Hosting. The others pick it under Scan for Hosts on the same network, or paste its join code from anywhere.

  3. Compare and sync

    Check the list of new, changed and conflicting files, then Sync Now. Only the files that differ are copied, PC to PC.

TipEvery PC needs BepInEx itself installed once. SyncCrate syncs the plugins and warns you if BepInEx is missing. Close Subnautica before syncing a save.

// 04 Common problems

When Subnautica mods don't match

  • BepInEx missing on the new PC

    Plugins copied into a game without BepInEx do nothing, and the game starts unmodded without saying why.

    The mod health check warns when BepInEx isn't installed and links to its download.

  • A save that needs mods

    A playthrough with modded items, vehicles or biomes needs the same mods on the PC that loads it.

    Sync plugins and saves together, so the save arrives with everything it was played with.

  • One mod crashes the game

    With dozens of plugins, finding the one that breaks the game after an update is slow by hand.

    Find a broken mod switches half of the plugins off, you test, and it narrows it down in a few rounds. Plugins are switched off by renaming, so BepInEx skips them.

  • Plugins run code

    BepInEx plugins are .dll files that run in the game.

    .dll files are flagged before they sync, and nothing changes until you approve the list. Only sync with people you trust.

// 05 Subnautica

Good to know

  • Only plugins and saves sync. Plugin configs in BepInEx/config and BepInEx itself stay as they are on each PC.
  • Below Zero is a separate game with its own folders; this page is about the first Subnautica.

// FAQ

Subnautica questions

Where do Subnautica mods go?

With BepInEx, plugins go in BepInEx/plugins inside the game folder, for example Steam/steamapps/common/Subnautica/BepInEx/plugins. SyncCrate finds the install in every Steam library.

Where are Subnautica saves stored?

On Steam, in SNAppData/SavedGames inside the game folder, one folder per slot. SyncCrate syncs them together with the plugins.

Does this add multiplayer to Subnautica?

No. SyncCrate doesn't change the game. It copies mods and saves, so you can continue on another PC or give a friend the same setup.

How do I move my modded Subnautica to a new PC?

Install the game and BepInEx on the new PC, then install SyncCrate on both. Host on the old PC, join from the new one and Compare & Sync. Plugins and saves come along.
