Fallout 4 guide · Updated

Your Fallout 4 load on another PC.

Give a friend your modded Commonwealth, or move it to a new PC. SyncCrate copies the mods in your Data folder, and after the first time only the files that changed. The game's own files and DLC stay where they are.

// 01 Why

Why rebuilding a Fallout 4 mod list takes all weekend

A big Fallout 4 mod list is hundreds of plugins, archives and loose files in the Data folder, often with F4SE plugins on top. Setting that up again on a second PC means downloading every mod again and making the same choices in every installer.

Fallout 4 also has two very different game versions since the 2024 next-gen update, and F4SE plugins built for one don't load on the other. A friend on the other version can't just copy your folder.

SyncCrate copies the mods in the host's Data folder to the other PC, compares every file by content, and after the first sync sends only new and changed files. You see the list before anything changes.

Built in for Fallout 4

  • Script warnings. .dll and .pex files run code on your PC, so they're flagged for you to review before they sync.
  • Turn mods on and off. Disabled mods move to a _Disabled folder the game doesn't load.
  • Game-running warning. SyncCrate warns you before syncing while Fallout 4 is still open.
  • Undo and history. Undo the last sync in one click, and put back any single file a sync replaced or deleted.

// 03 How it works

Sync Fallout 4 in three steps

  1. Install and add the game

    Install SyncCrate on every PC and add Fallout 4 in the Game Browser. Its folder is found automatically.

  2. One PC hosts

    The PC with the setup everyone should have clicks Start Hosting. The others pick it under Scan for Hosts on the same network, or paste its join code from anywhere.

  3. Compare and sync

    Check the list of new, changed and conflicting files, then Sync Now. Only the files that differ are copied, PC to PC.

TipBoth PCs need the same game version (pre or post next-gen update) and F4SE installed once. SyncCrate copies the mods, not the game, its DLC or F4SE's loader.

// 04 Common problems

When Fallout 4 mods don't match

  • Next-gen vs. old-gen game versions

    The 2024 update changed the game's executable. F4SE and many of its plugins need a matching version, and mixing them means crashes at start.

    SyncCrate copies the host's exact plugin files. Put both PCs on the same game and F4SE version first, then sync.

  • Load order doesn't come along

    Which plugins are active, and in what order, is saved in plugins.txt in your AppData folder, not in Data.

    SyncCrate copies the files. On the other PC, enable and sort the new plugins once with your mod manager or LOOT.

  • Paid content shouldn't travel

    Data also holds the base game, the DLC and Creation Club content. Copying those to a friend who doesn't own them isn't OK, and replacing base files can break a different game version.

    Fallout 4's own files, DLC and Creation Club content are never synced. Only mods are.

  • Loose files everywhere

    Texture replacers and patches often ship as loose files in meshes and textures, and they're easy to miss when copying by hand.

    Every mod file under Data is compared by hash, loose files included, and only differences are copied.

Good to know

  • Vortex and manual installs work; Mod Organizer 2 doesn't. MO2 keeps mods in its own folder and adds them to the game only while it runs, so they aren't in Data.
  • Scripts and plugins run code. .dll and .pex files are flagged before they sync, and nothing changes until you approve the list. Only sync with people you trust.
  • Your settings stay yours. Fallout4.ini and saves live in Documents and aren't synced.

// FAQ

Fallout 4 questions

Can I copy my Fallout 4 mods to another PC?

Yes. Install SyncCrate on both PCs, host on the one with your mods, join from the other and Compare & Sync. Then enable the new plugins in your mod manager on the other PC.

Does it copy the DLC or Creation Club content?

No. Fallout 4's own files, its DLC and Creation Club content are skipped. Each PC needs its own copy of any DLC the mods require.

Does it work with Vortex?

Yes. Vortex deploys mods into Data, which is what SyncCrate syncs. On the other PC the files are plain files, not Vortex-managed mods.

Does it sync my load order?

No. plugins.txt lives in your AppData folder. Enable and sort the plugins on the other PC with your mod manager or LOOT.
